Guatemalan Fabric Belt

Long hand woven fabric straps in various colours and patterns, each with braided tassels ends.A traditional Mayan craft, these fabric straps are made entirely by hand on a special narrow hand loom from brightly coloured cotton. They are predominantly used as belts (Faja) by wrapping around the waist and tying a simple knot however they are also used as a hair ornaments (Cintas). As the belts are all individually made each one is slightly different, varying at the whim of the weaver. However many of the designs are also often specific to different villages in highland Guatemala, and the different patterns would originally have allowed Guatemalans to identify where people were from.These fantastic cotton craft pieces show the vibrant nature of Guatemalan culture and the incredible traditional skills for which they are famous. The straps are very strong but we would recommend hand washing in cold water to preserve the colours.
