Kenyan Large Engraved Gourd

Hand painted and engraved by skilled artisans in Kenya, these large gourd ornaments feature designs of traditional patterns and local wildlife. As the shape of the gourd naturally varies each ornament will take on its own unique shape with its own engraved pattern. Gourds are grown in Northern and Eastern Kenya and are traditionally used to store and carry water and food. The gourds are collected and dried in villages before being transported to Nairobi where they are hollowed out, painted and carved. The products are not only beautiful, they support traditional skills and provide an income upcountry in the villages as well as in Nairobi where each workshop employs 5 people. Approx ø 17cm.
