Bang That (Ghanaian) Drum!

Djembes: Made to be Played!
If you’ve ever played a djembe, you’ll know what fantastic instruments they are. But have you ever played an authentic African djembe? Our collection of Ghanaian djembe drums creates an astounding range of sounds, from a soft whisper to a deep and powerful roar.
They are sourced from African Musical Instruments, a wonderful group that works to support various African communities and projects.
A Short History
Thought to have been invented in the 12th century in West Africa, the djembe drum was traditionally played by high-class court musicians known as griots for storytelling and passing down historical information.
Aspiring drummers (djembefolas) must learn both the songs and the dance moves that accompany the rhythms they wish to perform. Today, djembes are played at cultural events such as harvest festivals, births, weddings, and funerals.
Why Choose One of Our Ghanaian Djembes?
-
Sustainably made: Crafted from Tweneboa, a fast-growing West African cedar tree, sourced under license from the Forestry Commission in Ghana.
-
Authentically made: Each piece is handmade by an African drummer, promoting ancient African music traditions and supporting musicians.
-
Durable: Made with tough, unbleached goat skins for long-lasting performance.
-
Lightweight & practical: Easier to carry than hardwood drums, ideal for workshops and events.
-
Rich, dynamic sound: Tuned to produce everything from a soft whisper to a deep, powerful roar.
How Are They Made?
A team of skilled artisans work together to produce these djembes, with each stage done by hand.
The drum body is carved from cedar wood using traditional chisels and axes. Adinkra designs are etched into the base, then sanded and washed.
The drum hoops are wrapped in vibrant African fabric offcuts, ensuring nothing goes to waste. High-quality rope is threaded through and tuned to perfection.
Goat skins are soaked for flexibility, then placed over the drumhead and secured with rope. Excess material is trimmed away to complete the drum.
And there you have it—a fully handmade, authentic Ghanaian djembe, ready to play!
