Artisan Gold Bhairab Mask No.360
About this product
This beautifully carved wooden mask has been hand made and painted by Newari artisans in Nepal. This amazing piece depicts a golden Bhairab (also known as Bhairava or Mahakala, ) a fierce aspect of the Hindu god Shiva. These effigies are often hung above doors and entranceways and are said to be protective of a house or temple. Depicted with a crown of five skulls symbolising the transmutation of negative afflictions (greed, aggression, ignorance, pride and jealousy) into the five wisdoms. This kind of mask features frowning, angry eyes, sharp tiger teeth and sometimes flaming hair or coiled serpents; he is associated with annihilation and is sacred to Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. These pieces are sold individually. Please do not order more than one of each individually coded unit. The mask will show small signs of wear and tear, adding to their rustic uniqueness.
