Small Totonac Mask

This small Totonac mask portrays a stylized face typical of the region and era. A gleeful expression can often be seen on both masks and full figure statues, but it makes an intriguing feature as it was rare to see emotion depicted elsewhere in Mesoamerican art. The Totonac are an indigenous people of Mexico, believed to have inhabited the city of Teotihuacan, home of the most architecturally significant Mesoamerican pyramids - the Pyramid of the Sun and the pyramid of the Moon.
